Joining forces with Curated by GIRLS and coGalleries, we are proud to announce the launch of our first printed zine accompanying Laurence Philomène’s first solo exhibition “Non-Binary Portraits” in Berlin.

Thanks to the collaboration of the online art collective Curated By GIRLS and Berlin’s online art platform coGalleries, Canadian artist Laurence Philomène will show their ongoing photo series “Non-Binary Portraits” for the first time at coGalleries’ Mitte location. The exhibition, running from May 19 to 30, will tackle issues of representation of trans and non-binary people, giving them agency and space to express themselves. By collaborating with the artist’s friends and letting them represent their own identity in any way they wanted, the traditional difference between the active role of the photographer and the passive model has been erased, thus leading to sincere and playful portrait series, employing Laurence’s distinctive pop color play and attention to detail.
“My aim with this series is to showcase a diversity of trans & non-binary experiences that tend to be under-represented in mainstream media & give non-binary subjects agency regarding how they are represented. It’s also an opportunity for me to document my friends & their unique style & point of view. As someone who identifies as non-binary it’s obviously a very personal topic for me but I wanted the photos to go beyond my own identity and really be a collaboration between me & the models.”
The zine, specially printed for this occasion in limited edition, will feature interviews with the artist and the curators, as well as the artworks (and some exclusive content on top of that), making it possible for everyone to take a piece of the exhibition back home with them.
The zine will be available for purchase at the exhibition opening on May 19, as well as at a workshop with Laurence Philomène, taking place at Blogfabrik on Saturday May 20.
“Non-Binary Portraits” will take place May 19-30 at coGalleries, Torstrasse 170, 10115 Berlin. More info can be found here.
